Not Easy, Even With Help, But Worth Effort. The Buteyko method is to gradually train your automatic system to tolerate higher carbon dioxide levels and not hyperventilate. To accomplish this you practice doing shallow breaths through your nose (no more mouth breathing) for two breaths and on the second exhalation; you practice extending the pause before the next breath for as long as comfortable, which will be relatively short initially, but you will greatly extend it as you practice over days. Becoming more comfortable for longer periods before breathing in again. The goal is increasing the length of time the pause was held over your practice sessions and each time you practice being able to extend it further and further working up to a goal of being able to do 60 seconds, etc., comfortably. There are qualified teachers trained by the Buteyko firm and must have worked with 56 trainees before going on their own. Many participants believe you need the support and corrections, of a teacher, and they do follow up with you for 18 months on your progress by phone. This may be that many people learning this, modification of a lifestyle, like in AAA (alcoholics) will not make it thru the rather disciplined practice necessary here to accomplish it and stick with it solely on your own. A self training is available from many sources including videos, etc., to self learn the practice steps necessary to convert your survival system to tolerate a higher Carbon Dioxide level before automatically breathing. You can, and many do, learn a shallower and automatic involuntary breathing pattern solely thru the nose, following books, videos, etc. Most that accomplish it fully, with or without a teacher, all say it was difficult in re-establishing the self modification of this involuntary body operating system change. It seems to matter not how far or how close they came to be successful in accomplishing their goal, that no how far they did or did not get, all reported considerable improvement in over all quality of life and in getting off prescriptions. Therefore, you could say even those failing to fully accomplish the training still gain much benefit. The goal is to stop your automatic breathing operating system to stop hyperventilating, tolerate higher Carbon dioxide levels automatically. This change to hyperventilation may have been brought on by high stress levels even in children. Anxiety, etc., causing a developing a habit of deeper breathing. Basically this is now being unlearned and it does not have to be done by the Buteyko method. Buteyko should have credit for figuring it out and developing a system of his own to correct it. However, there are other ways to retrain your automatic system beside the ritual practice sessions over months of time of the Buteyko method. All get some effects in short order, but complete cure takes time and effort.
